Commander, Space Delta 11 (Ranges & Aggressors), Space Training and Readiness Command (STARCOM)

Col. Jay M. Steingold, an inter-service transfer from the U.S. Navy, is the Commander of Space Delta 11 (Ranges & Aggressors) under Space Training and Readiness Command. His Guardians, Airmen, Sailors, and Marines are responsible for delivering realistic, threat-informed test and training resources to U.S. Space Force and Joint/Coalition Space Operators via live, virtual, and constructive threat replication, leveraging the National Space Test and Training Complex spanning multiple space warfighting disciplines.

Steingold graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in May 1992. He earned his Wings of Gold as a naval flight officer (NFO) in May 1994. After advanced flight training, Steingold joined Patrol Squadron EIGHT (VP-8) at NAS Brunswick, Maine and twice deployed to Italy in support of Operations SHARP GUARD and DELIBERATE GUARD. After a shore tour as assistant professor of naval science at Virginia Tech, he served as a catapult & arresting gear officer onboard USS HARRY S TRUMAN (CVN-75) and deployed to the Arabian Gulf in support of Operation SOUTHERN WATCH. Steingold joined VP-30 at NAS Jacksonville, Florida where he became an NFO and Weapons & Tactics Instructor. In 2004, he transferred to VP-26 for his department head tour during which he performed various duties including training and operations officer, deploying three times to Italy and Bahrain where he flew in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM. Steingold served as budget analyst in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy and as deputy for resources & acquisition management on the Joint Chiefs of Staff from 2006 to 2009. Through 2012, he served as executive officer and commanding officer of Scientific Development Squadron ONE (VXS-1) at NAS Patuxent River, Maryland. Steingold then joined USS PELELIU (LHA-5) as her executive officer and deployed for 8 months in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM between 2012 through 2014. Selected for major command during his following tour as deputy for requirements at Naval Air Forces Pacific on NAS North Island, California, Steingold became commanding officer of Naval Weapons Station Earle, New Jersey beginning in 2015. From 2017 through 2019, he served as chief of staff at US Strategic Command Joint Functional Component Command for Integrated Missile Defense (JFCC IMD) aboard Schriever AFB. His final duty station in the US Navy was aboard US THIRD Fleet as assistant chief of staff for plans, policy, training, & readiness which included the role as Exercise RIMPAC Director. In 2022, Col Steingold became a Guardian in the US Space Force and assumed the role of Chief, Satellite Communications Mission Area Team onboard Headquarters Space Operations Command at Peterson SFB. He oversaw all military and commercial SATCOM integration, requirements, and Space Delta 8’s operational readiness.
